It is a condition of rental that at time of pick-up, the renter must present a physical Credit Card or Debit Card. See accepted cards and payment methods below.

  • We accept the following Credit Cards: Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
  • We accept the following Debit Cards: Visa and MasterCard ONLY.
  • We do not accept a prepaid or reloadable stored value card, a travel money card or an EFTPOS card. Please note: some locations may accept a prepaid or reloadable stored value card as a final form of payment at the end of the rental – you are advised to enquire with the locations directly.
  • We do not accept electronic payments with phones or contactless tap-and-go payment types.
  • When paying by credit card or debit card a transaction fee of 2.53% for MasterCard and Visa, and 3.57% for American Express including GST will apply on all charges at time of payment.

When you start your rental, a pre-authorisation hold will be placed on your credit or debit card for the duration of the rental. Please see Credit and Debit Card Pre-authorisations under Payment Options for information regarding pre-authorisation hold amounts which will be placed on your card for the duration of your rental.

Budget locations in New Zealand can accept cash, travellers cheques, money orders and personal cheques as payment, but these must be issued in New Zealand Dollars and can only be used when you return the vehicle.

When you start your rental a valid and accepted credit or debit card must be presented as credit identification.

International visitors who have a prepaid voucher can pay cash up front for any insurance excess or optional extras (e.g. Excess Reduction, GPS, Child Safety Seats, Roadside Safety Net etc.), and upon return of the vehicle for any miscellaneous charges (e.g. fuel, additional rental hours or days, one-way fees etc.).

Budget New Zealand, will no longer accept any Diners Club International credit cards at time of reservation and rental.

A card transaction fee of 2.2% for Visa and MasterCard and 3.1% for American Express and Diners Club applies to the total rental charges including GST (but excluding any Airport and Wharf fees) where a credit or debit card is used for payment.

Airport and Wharf fees and the GST on these fees are not included in the calculation of the card transaction fee.  If the rental takes place at a location that is subject to an Airport or Wharf fee, the final card transaction fee will be less than 2.1% of the total invoice value for Visa and MasterCard transactions and less than 3.1% of the total invoice value for American Express and Diners Club.

The card transaction fee is subject to GST.

Effective 17 March 2020, Budget New Zealand, will no longer accept any Diners Club International credit cards at time of reservation and rental.

Budget rates do not include fuel. Budget offers three options for fuel:

  • Return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when rented and no refueling fees will apply
  • Return the vehicle with less fuel than when rented and pay a refueling service charge for the fuel used. The refueling service charge is a rate higher than the local retail fuel prices. The latest refuelling service rate will be shown on your rental agreement and is subject to GST.
  • Purchase the prepaid fuel option

The prepaid fuel option allows the renter the option of purchasing, a full tank of fuel at a price competitive with the prevailing local service station rates for regular unleaded petrol. This eliminates the need to refill the tank before the vehicle is returned. There is no credit given for fuel remaining in the vehicle at the time the vehicle is returned so the renter should return the vehicle with as little fuel remaining as possible.

The prepaid fuel purchase option must be selected at the beginning of the rental.

We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit and debit cards.  These cards must show the customer's name, signature and card number, with their applicable logo.  Prepaid and Reloadable debit cards and Gift cards, as well as Travel cards and EFTPOS cards are not accepted.

Regardless of how you pay, when you start your rental, a pre-authorisation hold will be placed on your bank account for the duration of the rental. In addition, depending on your payment method or type of booking, additional Pre-authorisation holds will apply.

Please note the Pre-authorisation will be reflected as one amount on your bank account.

 

At the end of your rental

  • Final applicable charges will be processed after your rental is returned; and if applicable any unused portion of the pre-authorisation hold will be released back onto your card.
  • The time it takes to release the pre-authorisation hold is not within our control. Depending on your bank, the money is usually released from hold within 7-10 working days. If you have any queries regarding the time it takes to release this pre-authorisation hold, we recommend you contact your bank.
  • As this is a temporary hold the pre-authorisation amount will not show as a transaction on your statement. Avis will not be held responsible for any overdraft fees incurred.
